The Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band will be hosting “An Elder’s Gathering – Authenticity Symposium” on August 26th – 27th, 2014 from 9 am to 4 pm. The event will take place in Stephenville, NL at Day’s Inn.

Day one of the symposium will be targeted towards developing a consensus around guidelines that determine authenticity including;  finding areas of commonality,  defining areas that need further research, as well as identifying areas that will inherently have regionally diverse opinions. Day two would focus on applying the authenticity guidelines to the existing body of Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge that has been identified.

The Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band is seeking members that are willing to share their knowledge in the following areas: Traditional knowledge of ceremony and traditions, knowledge of traditional medicines, artisans, tool makers, crafters, hunters, fishers, trappers, gatherers, traditional singers and drummers, traditional storytellers, historians and language knowledge.

Participants will be required to attend both days, and must provide their own transportation to and from the symposium.  Accommodations and Meals will be provided. A travel subsidy is available to those travelling from outside the area.
