Mi’kmaq Celebration
In 2005, the Federation of Newfoundland Indians created a website to celebrate the distinctive culture of the Mi’kmaq living in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Newfoundland Mi’kmaq claim a special historical bond with their home on this island – a bond built by generations of men and women who traveled the Newfoundland interior and harvested the wild foods of the land, rivers and oceans.
The presence of Newfoundland’s Mi’kmaq people has been documented through portraits, oral history accounts and the discovery of a multitude of artifacts. The Mi’kmaq Celebrations website captures some of this history through photographs, writings and recollections of Mi’kmaq people. For those wishing to learn more about the place of Mi’kmaq people within this province the Celebration Website is an ideal place to start.
