Second Draft of Qalipu/Marathon Gold Socio Economic Agreement, Members Invited to Review and Attend Virtual Community Meeting

Marathon Gold is a gold resource development company focused on a gold reserve located in our territory in central Newfoundland. In 2019, representatives from the company expressed a desire to share plans and consult with our membership and attended several regular meetings of the Band Council to share presentations and answer questions.  Subsequently, a joint working committee was established to continue discussions and better serve our members’ interests around environmental stewardship and economic opportunities.

A draft Socio-Economic Agreement (SEA) was established between Qalipu and Marathon Gold and in September, the Band hosted a virtual community meeting to review the draft and seek feedback.  The Band collected additional feedback through posting the SEA on the qalipu.ca website and inviting responses.  All information collected was consolidated and presented to the Chief and Council and edits were made to the initial draft.

The Band would now like to present the second draft SEA and invite membership review and participation at an upcoming Virtual Community Meeting.

Please join Band Manager Keith Goulding for this meeting via Zoom on January 25 at 7:30 PM

Please pre-register for this meeting by emailing council@qalipu.ca

Qalipu Offices to Close Early for Holiday Break

Please be advised, Band offices in St. George’s, Stephenville, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor and Glenwood will be closing at 4:00 PM on December 18, 2020, and reopening at 9:00 AM on January 4, 2021.

Band Manager Keith Goulding made the decision to close for the holidays a few days early after reflecting on the impact the global pandemic has had on the staff.

Goulding noted, “In reflecting on the hard work done by staff to reopen the offices and maintain a firm handle on workplace responsibilities in this unprecedented time, and in light of other challenges we have faced due to COVID-19, I’ve decided to close the offices a few days earlier than previously scheduled.  2020 has been a difficult year and we have weathered this storm well and together.”

Goulding went on to thank the team for their commitment and dedication in serving the Nation, and looks forward to a New Year and continued service for the people and communities the Band serves.
