Announcement of By-Election for St. George’s Ward

The Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band will hold a By-Election for the position of St. George’s Ward Councilor.

  • Call for Nominations: Opens Monday, February 24, 2025, at 9:00 AM and closes Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
  • Nomination Forms will be available February 24 at 9am

    • Pick up at any Qalipu First Nation Band Office (St. George’s, Ktaqmkuk Mi’kmaw Museum, 183 Main Street)

Voting in this election will be conducted exclusively by electronic means, meaning members will cast their votes using either telephone or internet-based voting.

To ensure you receive your Voter Information Package, which includes the necessary details to access the electronic voting system, please verify that your mailing address and/or email address are up to date.

To update your contact information, please complete one of the following before March 7, 2025:

1️⃣ By Telephone: Call the Indian Registration Administrator, Nancy O’Connell, at 709-634-4010 for assistance.
2️⃣ In-Person: Visit any Qalipu First Nation Band Office to verify or update your contact details.

Electronic Voting Period & Voter Helpline

🗓 Voting will be open from Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 8:00 AM until Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 8:00 PM.

Voting systems will be accessible 24 hours a day throughout the voting period, allowing members to cast their ballot electronically at any time via telephone or online.

📞 Voter Helpline: A dedicated Voter Helpline (1-888-281-8683) will be available to assist members who may not have received their Voter Information Package or need to retrieve their secure PIN to submit their electronic ballot.

🔹 Hours of operation for the Voter Helpline will be announced at a later date but will fall within the voting period of March 12 – March 26, 2025.

The voting window for the Qalipu First Nation Band Council Election ended 8pm on Friday October 25. As per the referendum vote in the 2021 election, the newly elected Chief and Council will be the governing body of Qalipu First Nation for the next 4 years, term ending, next election in the Fall of 2028.

Election Day for Qalipu First Nation

Today, Friday, October 25, 2024 at 8:00pm NL Standard time the voting window will officially close. Members who need assistance or are looking to retrieve their voters PIN, can call into the voters helpline at 1-888-281-8683 from 9:00am until 8:00pm Newfoundland standard time.

Results of the election, under the direction of the Electoral Officer, Reisha Knott will be posted at approximately 8:30pm NL Standard Time at Qalipu.ca, Qalipu First Nation Facebook Page, and Twitter at @Qalipu2011.

Election Helpdesk Now Open

The Qalipu Election Helpdesk is open as of 9:00am NL Standard time, October 16th. It will be open from 9:00am to 6:00pm daily until October 24th. On October 25th, it will be open from 9:00am until 8:00pm.

We encourage members that are looking for their voter information packages that includes your voting PIN to first:

  • Check your Email (if you had a current email listed on your KINU membership profile). If you do not see the email in your main inbox, please check your ‘junk’ folders.
  • Check postage mail. If you do not have an email listed on your KINU profile but had your current home address, you will receive your voter package by postage mail.
  • If you have no information listed on your KINU membership profile, do not have current information listed or have not received your voter’s package via email or postage by October 24, please call the help desk at 1-888-281-8683.

A notice has been put forward to the Qalipu Electoral Officer, Reisha Knott on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at approximately 7:50PM that Candidate Liz LaSaga-MacNeil who was in the running for Western Vice Chief has withdrawn her candidacy effective October 8, 2024. As required under Section 22 of the Custom Rules Governing Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band Elections the Candidate’s Letter of Withdrawal has been received by the Electoral Officer.

Qalipu Today – 2024 QFN Band Council Election

The 2024 Qalipu Mi’kmaq Band Council Elections are underway! After ten days of the call for nominations opening, its closure on October 2nd came with the announcement of twenty Candidates in the running for positions of council, for Chief, Western and Central Vice Chief, and nine Ward Councilors. Voting for membership will take place electronically by phone or website access, at anytime, beginning October 18th 8:00am and ending October 25th 8:00pm. A notice has been put forward to the Qalipu Electoral Officer, Reisha Knott on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at approximately 3:30PM that Candidate Brian Dicks who was in the running for Western Vice Chief has withdrawn his candidacy. As required under Section 22 of the Custom Rules Governing Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band Elections the Candidate’s Letter of Withdrawal has been received by the Electoral Officer.
