Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce the launch of the COVID-19 Business Support Fund for member-owned businesses. The Band will distribute the funding as non-repayable grants of up to $10,000 for small businesses that qualify. The fund, made available through Indigenous Services Canada, aims to support small businesses that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

Manager of Tourism and Community Development Angela Brockway will receive and process applications starting on Friday, September 17, 2021. She noted that the application is straight forward and that the Band hopes to help as many as possible with the funds available.

“To be eligible, the business must have been in operation for a year, still financially viable and expecting to continue operations, and be able to use the fund to prevent layoffs or other negative impacts due to the pandemic. We also stipulate that the business has not already received any other non-repayable COVID-19 business funding.”

Personal and Professional Development Opportunities
In partnership with College of the North Atlantic (CNA), Qalipu First Nation (QFN) is conducting a survey to gather information to help guide activities in the areas of education, employment, and economic development. Whether interested in personal or professional development opportunities, the information collected will help QFN and CNA better respond to the training needs of Indigenous members, and current/future entrepreneurs to aid in the successful development of businesses.

We would like to notify our members that the Annual General Assembly (AGA) for Central Region, Grand Falls-Windsor on October 3rd has been postponed. As a precaution for the health and safety of our members and the public due to the recent changes in Covid-19 outbreak in this region, we will resume a Central Region AGA at a later date, TBD. A livestream from the September 26th Western Region AGA will be uploaded for members viewing in the coming weeks and announced once the video is available. Annual Reports can be picked up at all our office locations as soon as October 4th: Corner Brook, St. George’s, Stephenville, Grand Falls-Windsor, and Glenwood.   

All Qalipu First Nation five (5) satellite offices along with Benoit First Nation and No’kmaq Village joined in celebrations Wednesday, September 22, 2021! Crowds gathered for food, song, dance, and cultural teachings with highlights from entertainers such as Paul Pike, Spirit Bay Drummers, and the Corner Brook Aboriginal Women’s Drumming Association who led in a Sunrise Ceremony at Margaret Bowater Park. Local Mi’kmaw vendors also arrived at some of the satellite offices to showcase their craft and tell their stories with the community. Regional Chief PJ Prosper was also in attendance during the ceremony and continuing celebrations in Corner Brook in the afternoon. We would like to thank everyone that came out and helped make this day possible. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to come together as a Nation and with the communities to share, enjoy, and learn from one another. As previously posted, Qalipu First Nation will hold its Annual General Assembly’s (AGA) to discuss the activities of the Band for the fiscal year of 2020-2021. The AGA’s will be held on September 26 at 1pm in Corner Brook at the Greenwood Inn and Suites and again on October 3 at 1pm in Grand Falls-Windsor at Mount Peyton Hotel.

Members of the Band are invited to pre-register for the meetings if attending in person. To pre-register, please call 709-634-5163 or email communications@qalipu.ca. ensure to provide your phone number and band number when pre-registering.

Members are encouraged to tune in to a live stream of the meeting which is accessible through the Ginu membership database.

Join us on the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) on Thursday, September 30^th across Ktaqmkuk. We invite everyone to gather and share in this day of reflection and honour. A Walk and Vigil will take place across our satellite offices: Grand Falls-Windsor Town Hall at 10:30am, Corner Brook Mikwite’tm Garden at 11:00am, St. George’s and Stephenville will join at the St. George’s Band Office for 11:00am, and Glenwood will commence at 1:00am at their Band Office. A donation will also be made by Qalipu First Nation to the Indigenous Learning Centre.
