Youth Summer Employment Program 2022

Qalipu First Nation (QFN) Department of Education and Training have reopened employer application for their 2022 Youth Summer Employment Program (YSEP)!

Program Objective
The Youth Summer Employment Program is a partnership between the Government of Canada and QFN that provides Indigenous Youth with an opportunity to gain employment with local employers during the summer months. The aim of this program is to improve employability skills and provide tools that help youth advance their education.

Eligible Employers (Applicants)
QFN accepts proposals/ applications from community organizations who are interested in providing meaningful summer employment to Indigenous Youth. Interested employers must submit a completed YSEP application and attach any required supporting documentation by April 1, 2022. Notification will be sent from Education and Training by the end of April for successful employers.

Join the growing list of employers who are supporting Indigenous students on their journey! Business owners and organizations are invited to apply for a summer student by 4:00pm NDT on Friday, April 1, 2022.

Virtual Invitation Current Qalipu Post-Secondary Students [Winter Semester 2022 Reimbursements]

The Qalipu Education and Training Department will be hosting a webinar for all current Qalipu funded students to provide them with an opportunity to speak with staff virtually to receive tips for their Winter 2022 reimbursement!

[This webinar is for students who are currently receiving funding support. A session for aspiring students or those who will plan to submit funding applications will follow in the future.]

Participants who register and attend the webinar will be entered to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

Expression of Interest for Member-at-Large

Qalipu First Nation is currently seeking a Member-at-Large to join their Education and Training Committee. This unique opportunity will give hands-on access and input into the current structure of our Education and Training Department and future outreach to help guide the work for our Post-Secondary Students through programs, training, and engagements.

The ideal candidate is a Band member living in the province with a background in an education related field and teaching of five years’ experience. If you are committed and want to contribute your knowledge as a volunteer on this committee, please see below for an Expression of Interest.

Byelection – Call for Nominations Exploits Ward Councilor

In accordance with the Custom Rules Governing Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band Elections and at the request of Electoral Officer, Carol Lahey, nominations are invited for the position of Councilor in the Electoral Ward of Exploits for the byelection to be held December 2, 2021.

Nomination forms are available for download beginning 9:00am on Monday, November 1st at www.qalipu.ca<http://www.qalipu.ca/> or pick-up at Grand Falls-Windsor Office at 28 Hardy Avenue. Nominations will close at 4:00pm Tuesday, November 9th.

Completed nomination forms must be returned to the Corner Brook office, 3 Church Street, A2H 2Z4 either by postage mail or hand delivered. A non-refundable fee of $25.00 shall be submitted with the nomination papers in the form of money order, bank draft, certified cheque, or cash. Nominations are to be received no later than 4:00PM on November 9, 2021 and will be considered as filed with the Electoral Officer for the purpose of the Band byelection to be held on December 2, 2021.

RCMP Summer Student Program Opportunity 2022

Qalipu First Nation Band and the RCMP are continuing their work together to provide work experiences for Indigenous youth who are interested in a career in policing and/or justice. This employment opportunity will give you an insightful view of the RCMP and may help you decide if this is a career opportunity you wish to pursue. This youth opportunity is an eight (8) week duration, paid program from June-August 2022 at your local RCMP detachment. Successful applicants will attend a one-week training session at the RCMP Headquarters in St. John’s, (all expenses paid) prior to being placed at the RCMP detachment closest to their location. This program is a great steppingstone for individuals interested in pursuing a career with the RCMP.

Location of Position: For the Summer of 2022, successful applicants are placed in locations near their hometown within the RCMP jurisdictions of Grand Falls, Stephenville, Deer Lake, Corner Brook, Gander, Bay Roberts, and Harbour Grace.

Eligibility Criteria: Interested applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Have completed high school
  • Be a member of the Qalipu First Nation Band or Self-Identified Person (students are asked to indicate on their cover letter their Indigenous Ancestry)
  • Be between the ages of 19-29 as of June 30, 2022
  • Not have a criminal record
  • Currently registered as a full-time student
  • Be planning to attend full-time studies in September 2022
  • Valid drivers’ licence

Salary Scale: $ 16.00 per hour which includes 4% vacation pay @ 40 hours per week for 9 weeks.

Workplace Safety Training Initiative

In partnership with College of the North Atlantic (CNA), Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce we will be conducting a Workplace Safety Training Initiative at CAN Grand Falls-Windsor Campus from November 1st – November 15th. This opportunity is designed for Qalipu Members or self-identifying Indigenous individuals who are interested in completing workplace safety training courses.

Qalipu First Nation Launches COVID-19 Small Business Support Fund (Closed)

Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce the launch of the COVID-19 Business Support Fund for member-owned businesses. The Band will distribute the funding as non-repayable grants of up to $10,000 for small businesses that qualify. The fund, made available through Indigenous Services Canada, aims to support small businesses that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

Manager of Tourism and Community Development Angela Brockway will receive and process applications starting on Friday, September 17, 2021. She noted that the application is straight forward and that the Band hopes to help as many as possible with the funds available.

“To be eligible, the business must have been in operation for a year, still financially viable and expecting to continue operations, and be able to use the fund to prevent layoffs or other negative impacts due to the pandemic. We also stipulate that the business has not already received any other non-repayable COVID-19 business funding.”

Hunting and Trapping Guide Certification

In partnership with College of the North Atlantic, Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce we will be conducting two Hunting and Trapping Guide Training courses in both Gander (October 17-21) and Stephenville (November 6-10). This opportunity is designed for Qalipu Members or self-identifying Indigenous individuals who are interested in becoming Hunting and Trapping Guides in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Upon course completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Hunting and Trapping Guide training and ultimately be prepared to apply to become certified licensed Hunting and Trapping Guides in Newfoundland and Labrador through the Wildlife Division.

Applications are due NLT October 1st, 2021 @ 4:00PM NDT and can be submitted either via email to ymacdonald@qalipu.ca, or hand-delivered/mailed to the St. George’s Office.
