Coming to You – Post Secondary Engagement Sessions!

The Department of Education and Training will be conducting Post-Secondary Engagement Sessions with Qalipu First Nation (QFN) post-secondary students, parents and general community members across the island and in many of our ward areas. These sessions will include engagement around ways to work with student and community feedback to ensure that concerns and aspirations for the Post-Secondary Education Programming are directly reflected in the alternatives developed for the future. Participants will be joined by guest Carol Spicer, owner of Spicer Facilitation and Learning, who will facilitate the engagement sessions and gather feedback.

Engagement sessions will be held in St. John’s, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook, Stephenville and St. George’s. Engagement sessions being held at CNA or MUN campuses will be limited to only post-secondary students due to Covid-19 restrictions. All are welcome to attend the evening community engagement sessions. Each engagement session will provide participants with a brief overview of the current program outlining items such as eligibility requirements, intake dates, and how the reimbursement process is conducted. All those in attendance will by divided into small break-out groups to better address what should start, stop and continue happening with the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP). A facilitated discussion will be held to identify resources needed to support post-secondary student success within the community. Proof of vaccination will be required for these engagement sessions as per provincial regulations.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Qalipu First Nation worked together to hold and provide space for Walk and Vigils with communities surrounding Glenwood, Grand Falls-Windsor, St. George’s, Stephenville, and Corner Brook during Orange Shirt Day this year, the first year recognized by the Canadian Governments as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The support, honour, and respect shown by the communities was a sight that did not go unrecognized. It was a space to learn, reflect, and bring awareness to the Children lost and those who are still with us today on their continuous healing paths from the horrific result of Canadian Assimilation Schools – closing as recent as 1996.

Many thanks to community groups and associations, city and town halls, Minister Dempster, Joyce, and Byrne, and especially our staff of Qalipu and their families for working together to provide the space and safety of everyone during the day.
