Qalipu First Nation is currently seeking a Member-at-Large to join their Education and Training Committee. This unique opportunity will give hands-on access and input into the current structure of our Education and Training Department and future outreach to help guide the work for our Post-Secondary Students through programs, training, and engagements.

Qalipu First Nation Band and the RCMP are continuing their work together to provide work experiences for Indigenous youth who are interested in a career in policing and/or justice. This employment opportunity will give you an insightful view of the RCMP and may help you decide if this is a career opportunity you wish to pursue. This youth opportunity is an eight (8) week duration, paid program from June-August 2022 at your local RCMP detachment. Successful applicants will attend a one-week training session at the RCMP Headquarters in St. John’s, (all expenses paid) prior to being placed at the RCMP detachment closest to their location. This program is a great steppingstone for individuals interested in pursuing a career with the RCMP.

Location of Position: For the Summer of 2022, successful applicants are placed in locations near their hometown within the RCMP jurisdictions of Grand Falls, Stephenville, Deer Lake, Corner Brook, Gander, Bay Roberts, and Harbour Grace.

Eligibility Criteria: Interested applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Have completed high school
• Be a member of the Qalipu First Nation Band or Self-Identified Person (students are asked to indicate on their cover letter their Indigenous Ancestry)
• Be between the ages of 19-29 as of June 30, 2022
• Not have a criminal record
• Currently registered as a full-time student
• Be planning to attend full-time studies in September 2022
• Valid drivers’ licence

Salary Scale: $ 16.00 per hour which includes 4% vacation pay @ 40 hours per week for 9 weeks.

In partnership with College of the North Atlantic (CNA), Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce we will be conducting a Workplace Safety Training Initiative at CAN Grand Falls-Windsor Campus from November 1st – November 15th. This opportunity is designed for Qalipu Members or self-identifying Indigenous individuals who are interested in completing workplace safety training courses.

Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce the launch of the COVID-19 Business Support Fund for member-owned businesses. The Band will distribute the funding as non-repayable grants of up to $10,000 for small businesses that qualify. The fund, made available through Indigenous Services Canada, aims to support small businesses that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

Manager of Tourism and Community Development Angela Brockway will receive and process applications starting on Friday, September 17, 2021. She noted that the application is straight forward and that the Band hopes to help as many as possible with the funds available.

“To be eligible, the business must have been in operation for a year, still financially viable and expecting to continue operations, and be able to use the fund to prevent layoffs or other negative impacts due to the pandemic. We also stipulate that the business has not already received any other non-repayable COVID-19 business funding.”

In partnership with College of the North Atlantic, Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce we will be conducting two Hunting and Trapping Guide Training courses in both Gander (October 17-21) and Stephenville (November 6-10). This opportunity is designed for Qalipu Members or self-identifying Indigenous individuals who are interested in becoming Hunting and Trapping Guides in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Upon course completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Hunting and Trapping Guide training and ultimately be prepared to apply to become certified licensed Hunting and Trapping Guides in Newfoundland and Labrador through the Wildlife Division.

Applications are due NLT October 1st, 2021 @ 4:00PM NDT and can be submitted either via email to ymacdonald@qalipu.ca, or hand-delivered/mailed to the St. George’s Office.

A virtual camp for students in grade 9 through 12 to begin exploring various health careers and learn more about indigenous cultures and medicines will begin September 14 to October 5, 2021. The deadline for applications will be 5:00PM on Friday, September 3, 2021 and a fee of $25.00 will apply.
