Qalipu First Nation Band and the RCMP are continuing their work together to provide work experiences for Indigenous youth who are interested in a career in policing and/or justice. This employment opportunity will give you an insightful view of the RCMP and may help you decide if this is a career opportunity you wish to pursue. This youth opportunity is an eight (8) week duration, paid program from June-August 2022 at your local RCMP detachment. Successful applicants will attend a one-week training session at the RCMP Headquarters in St. John’s, (all expenses paid) prior to being placed at the RCMP detachment closest to their location. This program is a great steppingstone for individuals interested in pursuing a career with the RCMP.

Location of Position: For the Summer of 2022, successful applicants are placed in locations near their hometown within the RCMP jurisdictions of Grand Falls, Stephenville, Deer Lake, Corner Brook, Gander, Bay Roberts, and Harbour Grace.

Eligibility Criteria: Interested applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Have completed high school
• Be a member of the Qalipu First Nation Band or Self-Identified Person (students are asked to indicate on their cover letter their Indigenous Ancestry)
• Be between the ages of 19-29 as of June 30, 2022
• Not have a criminal record
• Currently registered as a full-time student
• Be planning to attend full-time studies in September 2022
• Valid drivers’ licence

Salary Scale: $ 16.00 per hour which includes 4% vacation pay @ 40 hours per week for 9 weeks.

In partnership with College of the North Atlantic, Qalipu First Nation is pleased to announce that we will adding another session of the Hunting and Trapping Guide Training to occur in Corner Brook (November 12-17). Hunting and Trapping Application

The session which was scheduled for Gander (October 17-21) has been rescheduled to a later date (TBD) and applications are still being accepted. This opportunity is designed for Qalipu Members or self-identifying Indigenous individuals who are interested in becoming Hunting and Trapping Guides in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Department of Education and Training will be conducting Post-Secondary Engagement Sessions with Qalipu First Nation (QFN) post-secondary students, parents and general community members across the island and in many of our ward areas. These sessions will include engagement around ways to work with student and community feedback to ensure that concerns and aspirations for the Post-Secondary Education Programming are directly reflected in the alternatives developed for the future. Participants will be joined by guest Carol Spicer, owner of Spicer Facilitation and Learning, who will facilitate the engagement sessions and gather feedback.

Engagement sessions will be held in St. John’s, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook, Stephenville and St. George’s. Engagement sessions being held at CNA or MUN campuses will be limited to only post-secondary students due to Covid-19 restrictions. All are welcome to attend the evening community engagement sessions. Each engagement session will provide participants with a brief overview of the current program outlining items such as eligibility requirements, intake dates, and how the reimbursement process is conducted. All those in attendance will by divided into small break-out groups to better address what should start, stop and continue happening with the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP). A facilitated discussion will be held to identify resources needed to support post-secondary student success within the community. Proof of vaccination will be required for these engagement sessions as per provincial regulations.
